PENHOAT-LANCERF FOREST
The largest coastal forest of North Brittany, offering a landscape of the most singular, where we meet foxes
Owned by the Conservatoire du Littoral since 1982, the Penhoat-Lancerf massif is the largest coastal forest massif in Northern Brittany. It is a 600-hectare plateau whose altitude is around 90 metres, formerly made up of moors. Maritime pines were planted in the 19th century with the aim of providing England with poles for its coal mines. This massif dominates the estuary of the maritime river Trieux by following its meanders. The Penhoat-Lancerf forest, set by the tides and the fixedness of the continent, offers one of the most singular landscapes, where you can meet many animals, including foxes and deer as well as various birds. From Coat Ermit, a belvedere located at the top of a rocky slope, appears the Château de la Roche Jagu, witness of a long past during which the deep rias were very coveted passage ways by men. At the place called Traou Nez stands a manor house which was the site of the tragedy of the Seznec affair, nowadays it has become a house of nature where many activities and exhibitions relating to local history are organised. It is also the starting point for walks in the forest. Notice to the amateurs!
