VILLA SILENCIO
It was the summer residence of Maurice Denis the painter (1870-1943). This holiday house known as "Silencio y Descanso"("silence and relaxation", in Spanish), was built for Marcelle Josset, a Paris based artist around 1894 by the Parisian architects Pierre-Henri Gélis-Didot and Théodore Lambert. The owner of Spanish nationality, performed at Comédie-Française, Saint Petersburg and South America. It was at the origin of the first casino of Perros-Guirec, constructed in the house of a local perrosienne in 1899. In 1908, Maurice Denis, an artist and painter (a Nabi movement theorist) bought the house and went there on holiday to 1943. The original plot was larger and had pine trees and a garage which was transformed into a workshop by the painter. Occupied by the German army during the Second World War, the floor of the villa was destroyed but the large-scale works and painted decor was not affected. Most of the interior decor paintings of the villa by Maurice Denis are currently found in the Jacobins de Morlaix museum.
