Ornithological station to learn more about and understand the different bird species on the Sept-Îles.
Manager of the Sept-Îles nature reserve, the Ligue de protection des oiseaux (LPO) has its quarters in this centre located on Île-Grande, in the heart of the Castel Erek wilderness site. It houses an exhibition that presents, in an interactive way, the ecosystem of the Sept-Îles: birds, of course, but also the riches of the underwater world and the foreshore. A projection room broadcasts live images captured by the camera installed on Rouzic Island: a privileged viewpoint on the colony of Northern Gannets that nests there from January to October. The station also houses a wildlife care centre specialising in birds, particularly marine birds, especially those that have been oiled. It was created in 1984, after a series of terrible oil spills (Amoco Cadiz, Torrey Canyon...), which engulfed thousands of seabirds to death and decimated endangered species such as the Atlantic puffin. Today, about 1,000 birds continue to be treated each year. The centre is closed to the public, but videos broadcast in the museum area allow live coverage of its activity, while outside the centre you can watch the birds recovering in a large aviary. The LPO also organises nature outings all year round: discovery of the foreshore, the flora of the coastline, the birds of Île-Grande... It also organizes boat excursions in the heart of the Sept-Îles archipelago.
