Visit to discover a remarkable abbey, steeped in history, on the banks of the Nantes-Brest canal.
The Bon-Repos Abbey stands majestically on the banks of the Nantes-Brest canal. Founded by the powerful Rohan family in 1184, it was their necropolis until the 16th century. It was home to a community of Cistercian monks until the French Revolution. Sold as national property in 1791, it fell into disuse. Since 1986, an association of volunteers, helped by the local authorities and under the wise instructions of the architect of the Bâtiments de France, has been working to restore this grandiose architectural ensemble. The result is impressive. From now on, the digital tablets, equipped with an augmented reality application, allow you to plunge back into the 18th century, the golden age of the abbey: the cloister with its rainwater collection basin, the abbey church, the kitchen and the rich apartments of the abbot are reborn before your eyes. The explanations also highlight the colossal work carried out over 30 years. Now owned by the Department, the abbey also hosts residencies, shows, contemporary art exhibitions, etc. In summer, it is the scene of a magical sound and light show, with light projections on the walls of the abbey, pyrotechnic effects and the involvement of more than 500 volunteer extras. This 2-hour show in eight scenes takes place this year in August (on the 3rd, 5th, 6th, 10th, 12th and 13th). The abbey also has gîtes. During the summer months, a small market of local producers is held in the vicinity of the abbey every Sunday morning.
