Ecomuseum like a traditional village, with collections of historic buildings, heritage objects and a biodiversity area.
As early as 1971, faced with the deterioration of Alsace's architectural heritage, a group of young enthusiasts decided to set up a conservation project. In 1980, the first house was saved from demolition and rebuilt on an uncultivated plot of land in the commune of Ungersheim: the start of the great adventure of the Écomusée d'Alsace! The museum welcomed its first visitors in the summer of 1984. Today, it's the largest open-air museum in France!
The Écomusée d'Alsace is organized like a real Alsatian village from the early 20th century, right in the heart of nature. Discover Alsace's rural heritage as you explore more than 80 traditional buildings: houses, farms, schools, chapels, railway stations, sawmills... It presents the main types of Alsatian architecture, selected for their representativeness of a particular region, period or social group. These buildings were all built thanks to donations from Alsatians. The immersion is completed by a collection of almost 100,000 everyday objects, clothes and tools, for a real leap into the past! But it's also an area of preserved biodiversity, with 4 nature trails: through the fields, through the forest and along the river. Thanks to our activities and volunteers, the village lives to the rhythm of the seasons and Alsatian traditions: pig feeding, cow milking, old-fashioned school and seasonal recipes. Don't miss the boat, cart and tractor rides and other themed events.
