VIKING STELE
Stele commemorating the Viking tragedy, 19 of whose youngsters tried to join the French Forces and 15 never returned.
At the bottom of the Avenue de la Comtesse, a plaque commemorates the drama of the Viking : on 5 April 1943, a crew of 19 young people tried to join the Free French Forces in England on board the Viking, one of the largest ships in the port. But after a last-minute defection, none of them had sufficient knowledge of navigation. The sea conditions were getting worse and worse when the Viking was boarded by the Nazis in Guernsey. Imprisoned and sent to deportation camps, fifteen of them did not return.
