ST. TUGDUAL'S CATHEDRAL
Cathedral of Saint-Tugdual in Tréguier, with a flamboyant gothic cloister and beautiful contemporary art collections.
Tréguier Cathedral is dedicated to Saint Tugdual, one of the seven founding saints of Brittany. Competition is fierce, but it's safe to say that this is one of the region's most beautiful religious buildings, finely crafted and characterized by Breton sobriety and austerity. However, it possesses a grace and clarity (notably in the cloister's arcades, which let in the light) that are more common in Burgundy. It was built over several centuries, between the 13thand 15th centuries. The Hastings tower (12th century) remains from the first Romanesque building. The Gothic nave and choir date from 1339 and 1400 respectively. The Tour des Cloches (Bell Tower) is topped by a 63-metre-high spire, decorated with card game motifs. At the heart of the edifice, surrounded by ex-voto statues, the monumental tomb of Saint Yves, patron saint of Brittany and lawyers, was restored in 1890, after its destruction in 1794. Died in 1303, this priest of Tréguier was renowned for his fair justice and care for the poor. The cathedral also boasts superb stained-glass windows and 17th-century organs. The adjoining flamboyant Gothic cloister features 46 arcades. Built in the 15th century, it is the best-preserved cloister in Brittany. Its galleries house, under majestic wooden vaults, the tombs and recumbent figures of many of the Episcopal city's notables and clerics. The cloister also hosts a number of fine contemporary art exhibitions every year, from April to October.
