ERNEST-RENAN STATUE

Erigée in 1903, in tribute to Tréguier's most famous child, is located on the center square. Ernest Renan is presented at the foot of Pallas Athènè. The sculptor would have inspired the Prayer on the Acropolis. Ecrivain and historian, Renan made a scandal by studying Jesus' life as if it were an ordinary historical subject. His work is intended to be scientific and leads to conservative political conclusions. For him, France has been decadent since the Revolution of 1789, and democracy is nonsense. The proof of the failure of democracy is Renan's defeat of 1870. Criticized, he will still have the greatest honors, being a member of the Academy of Inscriptions & Belles Letters, the French Academy and great officer of the Legion of Honor.
