This fort was built to reinforce the fortifications along the Finistère coast, and now houses a museum on the history of the region.
Located at the western entrance to the town, Fort Montbarey was built in 1777 to protect the landward flank of the military port, in accordance with the wishes of Louis XVI. Occupied by the Germans during the Second World War, and a work camp for thousands of Spanish Republicans, the fort was the last bastion of German resistance in the summer of 1944. During the Cold War, it became the air defense center for western Brittany. Now a museum dedicated to the people of Finistère during this conflict, the exterior features a deportation wagon.
