THE PETIT-CARHAIX DISTRICT

The hamlet of Petit-Carhaix is found around the Frout chapel, below Carhaix and on the edge of the Hyères. It has typically Breton houses of the 17th and 18th centuries, and among them, one from 1652, while another bears the mark of a professional cobbler. Originally, the village hosted traditional craft activities relegated to the outskirts of the cities because of the unpleasant consequences of their activity such as foul odours. For example, you could find tanneries which were established in the suburb of Petit-Carhaix because of the abundance of water (indispensable for their profession). They remained active until the 60s and today the different wooden buildings that were used to store the skins can still be seen.
