360 km long canal from Nantes to Brest, with 236 locks and a particularly pleasant view
The canal that links Nantes to Brest is a blue ribbon that winds quietly, a docile river set in a wilderness. You will find it in the valleys of the Erdre, Aulne, Vilaine, Oust and deu Blavet. Built between 1811 and 1836, the Nantes to Brest canal is 360 km long and has 236 locks that punctuate the navigation of light boats. Its construction was used to overcome the blockade of Brest by the feverish English! This is how Napoleon wanted to ensure the rear of the city of Ponant in case of a new conflict. It is by the way that he crossed inland Brittany. To get there, just take the green lane in the direction of Gourin. Crossing the entire length of the town of Châteaulin, the canal offers a particularly pleasant view, in the heart of the mountains surrounding the town. And to take full advantage of it, don't hesitate to walk or cycle along the towpath that runs along the entire length of the canal ... It will come as no surprise to see cyclists taking this path to discover inland Brittany. Indeed, with very little difference in altitude, it is the ideal walk for families. Take advantage of this adventure to discover the many riches that arise from time to time: the castle of Guerlédan, the Huelgoat forest, etc. Note: the canal splits at Carhaix. You can then go north to the city of Brest or go straight to Châteaulin.
