CONNÉTABLE - MAISON CHANCERELLE
Constable is the oldest sardine cannery in the world still in operation. For more than 160 years, it has passed on traditional know-how from generation to generation and strives to combine quality fish with tasty recipes. Part of its product range is MSC and Label Rouge certified.
History. Since the 17th century, the port of Douarnenez has always lived off sardines. It was therefore quite naturally that Laurent and Robert Chancerelle created a sardine press business in Nantes in 1828. Very quickly realizing the importance of sterilization, Robert Chancerelle decided to open, in 1853, the first cannery called "friture". In 1866, Wenceslas Chancerelle took over from his father and managed the shortage of sardines from 1880 to 1886 by opening up to the international market. A new crisis awaited the company in 1895, which was "saved" by the war and its great need for canned food. 1930 marked the beginning of mechanization and competition with foreign companies, and 1949 saw the appearance of the Le Consnétable brand. In 1988, Eric Chancerelle, of the 6th generation, adopted new technical means and developed recipes with a more modern taste.
That is to say that for 160 years, the house of Chancerelle has put women at the heart of its activity. At that time, the men went to sea and the women worked in the factory. Today, they occupy 70% of the company's positions.
The products. With olive oil, Espelette chilli pepper; with dried tomatoes..., sardines are endlessly available. Albacore or white tuna can be eaten whole or in pieces. Chancerelle also produces mackerel, salmon, cod liver, scallops...
Employment. Approximately 550 employees for 142 million euros in turnover in 2016.
