A rocky spur transformed into a memorial museum of the battlefield and fighting on the Alsace plain at Wattwiller.

The HWK is a rocky spur overlooking the Alsace plain. This strategic position was a key battleground in the First World War, with almost 30,000 casualties. Today, a place of remembrance, the battlefield is an open-air museum. The national monument was erected in memory of the fighting: the Altar of the Fatherland dominates the necropolis, and the crypt is a place of meditation. The Franco-German historial is a permanent page in the history of the war.

Es gibt wenig zu sagen, zu diesem Monument der Erinnerung. Wer hier nichts verspürt, den werden keine noch so großen Worte zu innerer Bewegung veranlassen. Insofern ist es eine sehr spezielle Selbsterfahrung hier zu sein. Man teilt die Trauer oder nicht. Falls nicht, ist man am falschen Ort und verletzt die Würde der Toten.

15000 jeunes Français et autant d'allemands y laissèrent leur vie et leur jeunesse. TOUT CE SACRIFICE pourquoi !
