A rocky spur transformed into a memorial museum of the battlefield and fighting on the Alsace plain at Wattwiller.
The HWK is a rocky spur overlooking the Alsace plain. This strategic position was a key battleground in the First World War, with almost 30,000 casualties. Today, a place of remembrance, the battlefield is an open-air museum. The national monument was erected in memory of the fighting: the Altar of the Fatherland dominates the necropolis, and the crypt is a place of meditation. The Franco-German historial is a permanent page in the history of the war.

Very peaceful and was not too crowded in the morning.
The crypt was small but has a very nice atmosphere in it.
The graveyard is impressive but also sad at the same time.
Sadly we didn't have enough time to do the hiking trip, where probably the trenches and battlefield scenes could have been seen
