L'ABRI DU MARIN (TI AR MARTOLOD)
It was Jacques de Thézac (1862 - 1936) who, in 1900, decided to create this Abri through the foundation of the work of the Abris du Marin, in order to offer sailors during the dull season, the possibility of having other activities - leisure, culture and training - than going to the bar or cabaret to get drunk. He wanted to fight alcoholism in this way. Belonging to the maritime heritage of the municipality, this place was recognized as a public utility in 1920, it is placed under the authority of a local committee composed of sailors, and a guardian who ensures compliance with the rules in force. The founder of the sailor's shelter therefore created a library, organized conferences and had a dispensary set up for the medical care of sailors and their families. In 1923 the establishment had to expand, victim of its success, but it closed its doors definitively in 1985 because of the evolution of mentalities and living conditions. Since 2002, and after some renovation work, the sailor's shelter bought by the municipality in 1992 has housed the media library and numerous exhibitions.
Between 1900 and 1933, 11 Abris du Marin were established in the ports of Finistère and 1 in Morbihan.
