BERTHEAUME FORT
A fortress for tourists in search of architectural and natural wonders with breathtaking views.
Stop here, the view is breathtaking! The Bertheaume fort is a small pleasure for tourists in search of architectural and natural wonders. First of all its history. The first mentions of Fort Bertheaume date back to the 15th century. Rebuilt at the instigation of Vauban, it became a privileged place for the defence and surveillance of the entrance to the bay of Brest. It was only in the 19th century that a footbridge was built to facilitate the passage from the mainland to the islet, a gondola allowing access until then. The Germans occupied the site during the Second World War and its liberation was difficult. From now on, the fort of Bertheaume has become a place for exhibitions, shows and an adventure trail that you absolutely must not miss! Shows retracing its history are also offered in the summer (ticket office on site). And for lovers of rock climbing, Bertheaume Iroise Aventures offers a variety of routes adapted to all levels of difficulty. Do not hesitate, the fort, because of its location, offers a splendid view of the entrance to the bay of Brest! All in all, it's really the ideal place for the whole family, a fun way to combine culture and adventure! Please note: various events are organised on the spot in addition to the annual visits and shows: the Vision festival (electronic music), on the first weekend of August; the Celtic Night, on 8 August; the Ascent of the Fort (race), on 18 August.
