DIEDENDORF CASTLE
The castle of Diedendorf is one of the rare examples of Renaissance stately homes still preserved in Alsace
Château de Diedendorf is one of the few surviving examples of a Renaissance manor house in Alsace. Construction began in 1577 on behalf of the bailiff of Sarrewerden. Originally, the building was surrounded by a perimeter wall with four round towers, of which only the north-west tower remains. The segmental-arched entrance gate, which housed the drawbridge, has been returned to its original position. The orchard behind the residence is an exceptional example of the high-stem orchards that once covered the region.
