The name of the commune may have its origin of the Gallo-Roman betudunum, which means "the birch fort" or "the birch hill". Betton currently has 10 418 inhabitants. The municipality has been implementing its municipal program for over 3 years. Several projects are thus being implemented. Thus, the development of the municipality continues with the urbanization of the Lower Renaudais sector while safeguarding and reinforcing a privileged environment, including the realization of the Parc Park. The adaptation of municipal services to the needs of the population is carried out, for example, with the transformation of the residence of the Ille into Accommodation for People Aged dependent. Several actions for sustainable development are also committed: the renovation of the Hague-Renaud School Group to make it an exemplary energy saving building, the installation of a new market that encourages more use on foot or the presence of an environmental recreation centre.
