SMALL PORT
Thanks to its location between Rennes and Redon, Guipry was one of the stops on Brittany's salt route
The Vilaine was one of the first rivers in France to be canalized, under the reign of François1er in the 16th century. River trade developed here, particularly in the transport of salt. Thanks to its location between Rennes and Redon, Guipry was one of the stops on the Brittany salt route. Salt from the Guérande and Ré marshes passed through Redon and Guipry on its way to Rennes. The quays, some fine 17th-century houses and street names such as rue des Gabelous (salt gendarmes) and rue des Sauniers (salt merchants) remain from this era.
