THE CASTLE OF THE ORCAN WOOD
The Château du Bois d'Orcan, built by Julien Thierry near Rennes, is listed as a historic monument and illustrates the golden age.
Close to Rennes, this 15th-century château was built by Julien Thierry, Anne de Bretagne's silversmith, and plunges you gracefully back into medieval times. First of all, let's not forget that the château is listed as a Monument Historique, and is a wonderful illustration of Brittany's golden age. The park also deserves your attention, as it has been classified as a "remarkable garden" due to the presence of works by sculptor Étienne Martin. This stately home, which has been completely restored over the past 28 years, boasts an important collection of medieval furniture and objects, bearing witness to life at the time of Charles VIII and Anne de Bretagne. Themed tours, as well as others for families, are offered throughout the year, and only on registration (places are limited). Near the castle moat, you'll discover the medieval garden of the Fountain of Life, created by Alain Richert. Comprising the Cour d'amour, the Fontaine de vie and the Jardin de curiosités, this three-part garden attracts the eye and delights the senses. The Bois d'Orcan is also remarkable for the Athanor, a showcase for the work of Étienne Martin (1913-1995), presented in the indoor museum. The sculpture park, designed with Étienne Martin, in this magnificent green setting, showcases monumental bronze works such as his famous Demeures. All in all, a wonderful visit. Schoolchildren are welcomed and guided by supervisors.
