THE CANAL FROM NANTES TO BREST
The Nantes-Brest canal stretches over 360 kilometers and includes no less than 236 locks
From the city of the Dukes to the north of Finistère, the Nantes-Brest canal stretches over 360 kilometres and includes no less than 236 locks. It winds its way through the valleys of Brittany and encounters several Small Cities of Character. One of these is Josselin, whose majestic castle overlooks the river to our great delight.
A quick visit to Josselin ? Take a few hours to enjoy the peace and quiet of the canal by the waters. In season, it is possible to hire a canoe or kayak, or an electric boat without a licence, for half a day or a day. You can also stay on land by renting a bicycle, electric or not, or even stroll on a donkey or in a horse-drawn carriage... What a way to really immerse yourself in the atmosphere of this medieval city!
For a real discovery of the canal over several days, count on a week to cover the entire route by bike. From Nantes to Brest, cross Brittany on a shady path, sheltered from the wind, on a fitted out cycle track. The ideal setting for a gentle roaming adventure.
You can also opt for a river cruise: boat hire, with or without a licence, is available from several towns. However, it is not possible to travel the entire canal by water. Itineraries of several days are still possible, for example from Glénac to Josselin (105 kilometres which will take you between 4 and 5 days of navigation).
