THE STING OF DEATH
Beautiful fountain perched on top of a cliff, an unusual cistern that can hold 860,000 liters, built in 1703.
Perched on the top of a cliff, this unusual cistern, which can hold 860,000 litres, was built under the authority of Vauban in 1703. Listed as a Historic Monument, the Belle Fontaine was used by ships to supply themselves with drinking water. This coastal military structure has undergone restoration work and has been open to the public again since 2016. Facing the sea, the wall holding back the water of the cistern descends to a terrace located a few centimetres above sea level. There are only two buildings of this type left in France.
