Discover la Etat Unis - Route 66 : What to bring back (handicrafts...)

The handicrafts on Route 66 are mainly developed by the populations of Hispanic and Amerindian origins that are found from Texas to California, with a large concentration in New Mexico and Arizona. In addition to these handicrafts, there are countless antique and souvenir stores along the route with the Route 66 stamp. It is important to note that most of the souvenirs in question are made at lower prices in other countries. While antique stores and yard sales are called Antiques, the majority of souvenir or craft stores are called Trading Post. Some of the most interesting places to buy crafts on Route 66 are Santa Fe (Central Market and Canyon Road), Gallup, considered the center of Native American crafts, and Olvera Street in Downtown Los Angeles, which is home to a famous Mexican market.

Native American crafts

This craft is above all pictorial, very decorative and sometimes even very graphic. Ideograms and pictograms are found on tents, shields, pottery, etc. Each tribe has its own art and the potteries are very different in their designs and the colors used. The craft depends on the natural environment and the way of life. Sedentary people have always made useful objects to preserve their crops. In New Mexico, the Pueblo population is renowned for pottery, jewelry, weaving and drum making. Silver jewelry is adorned with stones, especially turquoise. The more nomadic Plains Indians decorate their weapons and costumes and paint on animal skins. Their jewelry is refined. The various pow-wows organized by the American Indians (notably in Oklahoma City, Albuquerque and Gallup, among others) are also places where crafts are king. Be careful, though. There can be a real difference in price between items. So make sure you buy at a reasonable price because if you want to pay too little, you often end up with products imported from China or other distant countries.
