Suriname relies heavily on lodges and other resorts of varying degrees of luxury, so the best accommodation deals are undeniably to be found in youth hostels: not only are they very economical, but they also offer the chance to meet many other travellers!

However, some lodges can prove very interesting when you're traveling in a group, as in addition to the beds on offer you'll always find wooden hooks or beams on the outside terrace around which to stretch your hammock. So, even if it's not offered everywhere, it's a little closer to the style of carbet-style accommodation found all over French Guiana.

Room reservations are usually made by e-mail or WhatsApp. If you don't have a Surinamese number, don't bother calling via your local telephone network and risk seeing your bill swell very quickly: everything is done to facilitate communication.

What's very local

The country has a real diversity of accommodation, but we were surprised to find many top-class lodges right in the middle of the forest! Although it's hard to say that this is totally local, as it's well known that it's mainly built for tourists, the phenomenon is singular enough compared to the surrounding countries to underline the appeal of these accommodations. And very often, the emphasis is on harmony with nature: we recommend you try out one of these lodges or resorts, if your budget allows.

Breakfast is very important in Suriname! In hotels, you'll get the continental version, often very hearty and with plenty of savory options. In other establishments, and especially in local places, Surinamese can have a hearty breakfast including foods such as eggs, bread, fruit, porridge or rice with various accompaniments.
