Holy Week takes place between March and April, depending on the year, with dates varying according to the liturgical calendar. Mérida, like many towns and villages in Mexico, commemorates the Passion, Crucifixion and Resurrection of Christ, with impressive theatrical performances. While only Thursday and Friday are public holidays, the preceding days are often taken off by Mexicans. This is the main vacation week, when the big cities empty out and the seaside resorts fill up.
