Although less important than Easter, Christmas is celebrated in Greece. Christmas trees, decorations and gifts have made their appearance in Greek homes as a sign of westernization in this eastern land. Traditionally, however, it is St. Basil who plays Santa Claus on the evening of December 31. Christmas is a time for sharing delicacies such as melomakarona cakes , egg-shaped and flavoured with honey and olive oil, and kourabiedes, almond shortbread sprinkled with icing sugar.
