Budget & Tips
Accommodation is available at all prices in Bali, and value for money in the tourist areas is excellent. Outside the tourist areas, however, the choice is much more limited. Small hotels and guesthouses generally offer less comfortable facilities (bathrooms often have only cold water).
Hotels
Good and inexpensive. In the tourist areas, you can stay for around 300,000 Rp. For this price, you'll get a clean room, with private shower and fan, in a simple hotel that can be pretty. If you want a swimming pool and air-conditioning, you'll need to go up to Rp 400,000, or even a little more.
In this price range, you'll find mainly losmen, a kind of guesthouse where you can rent one or more rooms in a family home for a small fee.
Comfort and charm. Here, too, there's a wide disparity depending on where you're staying. In Bali, hotels in this category, at around Rp 600,000 - Rp 900,000, are generally excellent. They offer all the comforts of the West (nickel-plated bathrooms, large rooms, television, air conditioning) and, what's more, are generally extremely charming: small swimming pool, tasteful decor, tropical garden or park... All for the price of a basic hotel in France. These hotels are Bali's specialty, with hundreds of them all over the island. That's why it's one of the most popular destinations for honeymooners.
Luxury. This is the type of hotel that will be the same just about everywhere! In Kuta, Legian, Seminyak and Nusa Dua, you'll find all the big international names: Mercure, Sofitel, Hilton... You'll also find some very fine Indonesian establishments, less standardized, but just as charming and (very often) more authentic. There's no limit to prices, which can reach new heights (sometimes up to €5,000 for a heavenly room); service and restaurant prices are in line with the size of the clientele's wallet and are comparable to Western prices. These hotels generally offer a host of services and activities. Impeccable service and a dream setting at affordable prices for a broader clientele than that which usually frequents palaces in Europe, since, in low season, the price of some luxury hotels starts at Rp 1,500,000.
Campsites
The concept of glamping is becoming more and more widespread on Bali, and for the aficionados, you can also find a few campsites with tents. The practice is becoming increasingly popular with urban Indonesian youth too.
Good deals
Why not take advantage of your stay in Bali, Lombok or the Gili Islands to buy yourself a dream villa? It can be very economical if you're in a group, or if you're looking for a rather extraordinary experience... In any case, you should also know that in Bali, room rates can be negotiated down for longer stays.
