Great refuge with a capacity of 75 people. Possibility to climb the Virkisfell (1,109 m) to discover spectacular views of the surrounding area; about 2 km round trip. Guided tours daily on the glacier and surrounding geothermal zones. Hiking trails go from the refuge, including the one leading to the glacier front.

We did noy stay overnight, but we did a day trip from a campsite several hours away.
The drive is long and quite challenging at times. There are river crossings, deep and tall lava fields, red sand deserts (martian like), and rugged terrain.
We drove all the way to the Ice Cave but we did noy get to it as there is a fast flowing river and we were not dressed or trained for that side.
As a drive, I highly recommend it providing you have a reliable 4x4, plenty of fuel, and stocked up.
You wony regret it and see sights most don't venture to see.
Von Sigurdarskali aus kommt man zum Vatnajökull mit seinen bekannten Eishöhlen und dem spektakulären Gletscherrand.
