How to get there - Cardiff

Steps: Aberystwyth

Visit the revitalised capital. Highlights include the famous Principality Stadium, the castle, the National Museum, Cardiff Bay, Techniquest, the National History Museum in St. Fagans, the Wales Millennium Centre and the Chapter Arts Centre. Meet in the evening in the lively Cardiff Bay area.

Wye Valley

Steps: Newport

Picturesque green valleys dotted with charming unspoilt villages rich in historic sites. Visit Tredegar House, the walled town of Chepstow on the English border. Drive along Offa's Dyke to Tintern Abbey and then Monmouth.

Brecon Beacons

Steps: Blaenavon

This National Park is a walker's paradise. The Big Pit of Blaenavon, Llanthony Priory, Hay Bluff, Hay-on-Wye and its millions of pounds, the small town of Crickhowell and its famous pub, the Bear Hotel are worth a visit.

Elan Valley

Steps: Welshpool

Head to the centre where spectacular man-made lakes and pure nature will surprise you. Continue north to one of the country's most beautiful castles, Powis Castle, and Pontcysyllte, a World Heritage-listed aqueduct since 2009. Overnight in Llangollen.

Conwy and Anglesey

A prominent castle: the view from its 22 towers and medieval ramparts makes Conwy a must-see. The green and wild island of Anglesey ("Mam Cymru" meaning "Mother of Wales") offers rolling landscapes, pleasant beaches, historical sites(Beaumaris Castle, Oriel Ynys Môn Museum, Plas Newydd, Bryn Celli Ddu) and delicious seafood.

Snowdonia

Harlech Castle

Steps: Betws-Y-Coed

After visiting the sumptuous Caernarfon Castle, venture into the Snowdonia National Park around Mount Snowdon (1,085 metres) and ride the steam train. Betws-y-Coed and Blaenau Ffestiniog are well worth the trip.

Portmeirion

Steps: Machynlleth

Facing the Irish Sea, this whimsical village is the dream of architect Sir Clough Williams-Ellis and your first stop on your journey to discover southern Snowdonia. Pass through Harlech, Dolgellau on the side of Mount Cadair Idris (893m), Aberdovey and Machynlleth.

Pembrokeshire

Steps: Newport

On your way to the Coastal National Park, stop off at the seaside resort ofAberystwyth. Recommended towns: Cardigan and Newport. Places not to miss: National Wool Museum, Pentre Ifan dolmen, St David's Cathedral.
