How to get there - Kisumu

Nairobi-Kisumu

Réserve de Kakamega.

Steps: Kisumu

Flight from Nairobi to Kisumu. Several daily flights from and to Nairobi and Mombasa. Kisumu is the third largest city in the country by its size. It is not a great tourist interest, but it deserves a small visit. Walking around the city centre around Oginga Odinga Road is pleasant, where most shops and hotels are concentrated. The market, one of Kenya's busiest, is also worth a detour.

Hiking in the Kakamega Primary Forest

Steps: Kakamega National Reserve

50 km north of Kisumu, Kakamega is the only rainforest in Kenya. A site threatened by increasing deforestation and yet unique for its ornithological richness. You will not see some bird species anywhere else in Kenya. The forest is also home to many monkeys and small animals. With a little luck, you may see a leopard or a lazy person. In summer, the forest is invaded by thousands of multicoloured butterflies. Many hiking trails have been marked out and are well signposted. Possible walks of an hour, half a day, or a full day. Possible night in a camp inside the reserve.

Homa Bay, or the charm of a trip on the lake

Steps: Homa Bay

From Kisumu, one advice only, take the boat. Count four charming hours of crossing to reach the pretty bay of Homa. A pleasant excursion to be in contact with the lake and the life that takes place there. Overnight in Homa Bay.

Day 4

Mfangano Island, as close as possible to lake life

This large hilly island is inhabited by a welcoming population that makes a living from fishing and agriculture. A stay on this island is an opportunity for a total change of scenery and a warm contact with the inhabitants. Overnight on the island

Kericho, in the heart of the tea plantations

Steps: Kericho

From Kisumu, it takes 1 hour and a half by car. Kericho, the tea capital, is a city literally surrounded by plantations. The hills covered with plantations are bright green and are adorned with magnificent reflections before and after the rains. You can visit one of the plantations and the Tea Research Institute.
