How to get there - Auckland

Direction Northland : Bay of Islands

As soon as you arrive in Auckland, there is no time to stop, and head for Northland. Heading due north along the east coast, following the Twin Coast Discovery Highway. The first stop is at Bay of Islands to enjoy the superb scenery of this string of islands. Famous for its protected and fishy waters, it is also the birthplace of the nation. Waitangi was the place where the treaty between the Māori people and the Crown of England was signed.

Cape Reinga

The next day, continue north to Cape Reinga. At the end of the world, Cape Reinga is a sacred place for the Māori; it is also the meeting point between the turbulent waters of the Pacific Ocean and the Tasman Sea.

Waipoua Forest

Steps: Waipoua Forest

On your way back down south, drive by Ninety Mile Beach and explore its miles of sand by 4WD or on foot. If you feel like it, it's time to try your hand at surfing at Ahipara before continuing your journey along the west coast. After crossing Hokianga Harbour by ferry between Kohukohu and Rawene, enter the Waipoua Forest, home to the majestic giant kauris. Greet the guardian of the place, Tāne Mahuta, "God of the Forest," the largest kauri in the world.

Coromandel Peninsula - day 1

Steps: Opoutere

Head east to the Coromandel Peninsula. On the program: visit the cliffs of Cathedral Cove, immerse yourself in a natural hot water pool at Hot Water Beach and discover the sublime panorama of the peninsula from the top of Pinnacles. Spend a night in Opoutere.

Coromandel Peninsula - day 2

Quiet descent along the peninsula towards the south. Enjoy the scenery.

Bay of Plenty

Auckland anniversary Day.

Steps: Mount Maunganui

The road continues on the beautiful beaches of Bay of Plenty. Tauranga and Mount Maunganui offer excellent surfing spots and fishing is abundant. Catch a sunburn or a nice catch?
