How to get there - Ruhengeri Musanze
From Kigali to Muhazi Lake
Steps: Lac Muhazi
Muhazi Lake, located 40 km east of Kigali and very accessible, is not the most spectacular of the lakes, but its surprising cutting gives it a special charm. By car, it is possible to reach the lake by many trails running the hills from the main villages on the Kigali-Gabiro route. Enjoy the peaceful surroundings and a swim in the lake. Enjoy a grilled tilapia. Night in bed and breakfast in Gahini or Rwesero.
From Muhazi Lake to the banks of Burera and Ruhando
Steps: Lac Muhazi
After a last walk around Muhazi Lake, direction the northwest, via Kigali. 3 hours drive. Little known, but of remarkable beauty, these two lakes separated by a kilometre strip of land, offer sumptuous landscapes and real contact with local life. Night at the hotel bordering the lake.
Walk by canoe on Burera Lake
Steps: Ruhengeri Musanze
On the shores of lakes Burera and Ruhando, there are many traditional fishing communities. A canoe excursion will allow you to discover the surrounding nature, observe colonies of waterfowl, and enjoy breathtaking landscapes. Picnic on a lake island. Night in a hotel in Ruhengeri.
Ruhengeri - Rubavu: towards the shores of Lake Kivu
Steps: Ruhengeri Musanze
Rubavu is about one hour's drive from Ruhengeri. Lake Kivu offers white sandy beaches and crystalline waters where it is safe to bathe safely (no crocodiles or hippos in the waters of the lake). More to the south, Karongi, less tourist, more peaceful, allows beautiful excursions to the islands of Lake Kivu.
Discovery of Lake Kivu, one of Africa's Great Lakes
If you choose the discovery option, you can take the Congo Nile Trail, which starts in Rubavu. A hike from a few hours to several days is possible. If you prefer the boat, choose a kayak excursion. Guided tours are organized from Rubavu or Karongi, and even between those who have more time, with steps along the lake. The north coast, between Rubavu and Karongi, is just sumptuous. It's also possible to go through a walk with fishermen who will initiate you to the profession.
