Kilimandjaro trekking 6 jours Machame Route
Mount Kilimanjaro - Machame itinerary
There are six established routes up Mount Kilimanjaro: Marangu, Machame, Lemosho, Shira, Rongai and Umbwe. The Marangu, Machame and Umbwe routes all start from the south of the mountain. The Lemosho and Shira routes come from the west. The Rongai route comes from the north, near Kenya. All routes, with the exception of Marangu and Rongai, descend via Mweka.
Climbing Kilimanjaro via the Machame route
The Machame route, also known as the Whisky route, is one of the most scenic and recommended routes on Kilimanjaro. This popular route passes through magnificent forests to reach a ridge that crosses moorland areas to the Shira plateau. It then passes beneath the glacial precipices of the southern icefields to join the Barafu route to the summit. Because it can be done over longer periods and the incline is easier to manage, the success rate at the summit is much higher.

From Moshi, a 45-minute drive takes you through the village of Machame to the gateway to Kilimanjaro National Park. We'll wait patiently for our permits to be issued while watching the hustle and bustle of operations, many crews preparing for the journey ahead. Enjoy the beautiful rainforest scenery and windy trails as your guide talks you through the local flora and fauna and the natural wildlife. At these low altitudes, the trail can be muddy and quite slippery. We strongly recommend wearing gaiters and trekking poles.

Although you end the day at the same altitude as at the start, this day is very important for acclimatization. From the Shira plateau, we continue east up a ridge, passing the junction to Kibo Peak before continuing southeast towards the lava tower, known as the "shark's tooth" (altitude 4650m/15,250ft). Shortly after the tower, we reach a second junction, which leads to the Arrow Glacier. We continue downhill to spend the night at Camp Barranco.

It's one of the most impressive days to see the power, agility and strength of your team traverse this wall with what appears to be great ease. We continue on to Barafu Camp, and once reached, you've completed the southern circuit, which offers a variety of breathtaking views of the summit from different angles. Early dinner and rest in preparation for the night at the summit. Overnight at Barafu camp.

Excitement builds as morning arrives, with an early start between midnight and 2am. This is the most mentally and physically challenging part of the trek.
We continue on our way to the summit between the Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers, trying to stay warm and concentrating on the incredible sense of achievement that awaits us. Backtracking to the northwest, we climb through heavy scree to Stella Point on the crater rim. You'll be rewarded with a magnificent sunrise during your short break. Faster hikers can admire the sunrise from the summit. From here, for the rest of the hour-long ascent to Uhuru Peak, you're likely to encounter snow along the way.
Congratulations, one step at a time, you've reached Uhuru Peak, the highest point on Kilimanjaro and the entire African continent!
After photos, celebrations and perhaps a few tears of joy, we take a few moments to appreciate this incredible achievement. We begin our steep descent to Camp Mweka, stopping in Barafu for lunch and a very brief break. We strongly recommend wearing gaiters and trekking poles for the uncooperative gravel and volcanic ash. A well-deserved rest awaits you to enjoy your final moments of relaxation

As the weather has warmed up considerably, the terrain is wet, muddy and steep. We strongly recommend that you wear gaiters and trekking poles.
From the gate, a vehicle will be waiting in the village of Mweka to take you back to your hotel in Moshi (approx. 30 minutes). Enjoy an overdue hot shower, dinner and celebrations!
