Created in 1992, the European eco-label is the only official European eco-label usable in all member states of the European Union. It is issued in France by AFNOR Certification, independent certifying body. It concerns both products and tourist accommodation. The latter must comply with many criteria in the letter: to limit water and energy consumption, to reduce waste generation, to encourage tourists to use renewable resources and, last but not least, to initiate maximum environmental education. In total, an establishment must respect a strict specification for the small flower, symbol of the European eco-label.
