You can find hotel accommodation in a wide range of prices, from €50 per night in a double room, or even €30 for some hotels, up to several hundred or even thousands of euros for the palaces in the capital or in the most exclusive ski resorts. Youth hostels are an alternative, as is lodging with local people. Renting an apartment in the city or a cottage in the country is generally a good option. Prices drop in the shoulder seasons and for some vacation villages on the Côte d'Azur, prices are even lower for a stay in the last week before closing time.

To be booked

The campsites on the Côte d'Azur or the Landes are quickly full in July and August. If you haven't booked in advance you will have trouble pitching your tent! Similarly, hotels are full in Cannes during the film festival and in general in the cities when they host a big soccer or rugby match or the Tour de France.

What's very local

When you stay with a host family, it is very rare that sheets are not provided. Many hotels offer family rooms.

For food lovers

When you stay in a guesthouse, breakfast is usually included in the price of the night. Breakfast at the local's house is usually excellent and copious. In the countryside and especially at the farm you will have homemade jams and cakes, fresh bread and croissants from the village bakery, boiled eggs from the henhouse...

Smokers

It is forbidden to smoke inside the hotels, including, of course, in the rooms. Alarms go off if you do so and it is very unpleasant, you even expose yourself to a fine and other legal proceedings.

Tourist traps

On the internet booking centers you sometimes get discounts, but often booking directly with your accommodation provider is more advantageous.
