Timetable

Depending on the business, the days and hours of operation may vary, especially on Saturdays and Sundays. The major shopping centers (Kigali Heights, Kigali City Mall, Union Trade Center...) remain open on weekends.

Budget & Tips

Where no price is indicated, haggling is possible, for example in markets, in some craft shops, in taxis without taximeter (don't hesitate!) and in some hotels.

What's very local

The Kimironko market in Kigali is a must for lovers of colorful African fabrics. Seamstresses can even tailor clothes for you in a few hours. The Nyamirambo Women's Center, created in 2007 by the association of women survivors of the genocide, and the Umutako Iwacu cooperative, among others, are all dedicated to local crafts. Other NGOs, which help vulnerable people, also have their own handicraft stores (Hope Shop in Kigali, Handspun Hope in Musanze, Urugo on the Akagera road...). Numerous brands have been created in recent years, showing the vitality and talent of young Rwandan designers (Haute Baso, Sonia Mugabo, House of Tayo, Moshions Moshions, Uzi Collections, Rwanda Clothing...). Finally, tea and coffee lovers will not be disappointed. Many coffee shops have opened in recent years, featuring high quality Rwandan coffee and tea. By participating in Question Coffee's tasting workshops, you will even leave with a coffee of your own composition.

Tourist traps

It goes without saying: never buy drugs outside of approved pharmacies. Rwanda is actively combating counterfeit pharmaceuticals (far more serious than counterfeit brands), but the coronavirus crisis has caused a surge in the trafficking of counterfeit medicines (sometimes with real laboratory names) on the African continent, so increased vigilance is needed.
