Practical information : Eating out Bulgaria
Timetable
It is rare for restaurants to make a daytime break. They are generally open from morning to night, without interruption, especially in high season
Budget & Tips
Most restaurants accept both cash and credit cards.
The "Dineout" application lists more than 200 carefully selected establishments in Sofia and Bulgaria. You can book your table directly online, without even making a phone call, you receive confirmation and that's it!
What costs extra
It is customary to tip 10-15% of the bill, even if the service is included.
The local way
Depending on the restaurant where you go for a meal, various Bulgarian specificities may present themselves to you. First of all, some menus may be only in Cyrillic (in smaller towns), which will be difficult to understand if you don't read Cyrillic. Use a translator or look up the names of dishes you might find in order to understand the menu. The waiters will always be there to guide you. If you eat everything, why not let the chef choose?
Traditionally, Bulgarians serve a lot of their dishes in terracotta pots; once again, this varies today from one restaurant to another, and gives more authenticity to the dish tasted.
The bread is not served at the table at will as in France, it will be charged to you and is very often on the menu.
Be careful when ordering drinks. The equivalent of a 50 ml glass of alcohol is a 50 g glass in Bulgaria. Bulgarians tend to serve double doses in general, especially to men. It is better to specify single or double to the waiter.
Kids
Children are welcome in most restaurants.
Smokers
Smoking is banned in all enclosed public places since 2012, including restaurants.
Tourist traps
If you are approached by a rabble-rouser in front of a restaurant, especially on the Black Sea coast, the cuisine may not be the most famous..
