For a week for two people, the accommodation budget is about 300 € in youth hostels and first class hotels, 400/700 € in charming hotels and more than 1,000 € in more luxurious establishments. Prices are generally lower in winter, except in ski resorts. Breakfast is almost always included and most hotels accept payment by credit card (but be sure to bring cash just in case...).

To be booked

We strongly advise you to book your hotels well in advance if you come in summer. It is the most touristic period and the one during which the diaspora returns to the country. It is also the season of festivals. Especially in Sarajevo, during the film festival (mid-August): most hotels in the capital are fully booked.

For food lovers

The best breakfast you can expect from hotels in Bosnia and Herzegovina isuštipci, small doughnuts to be eaten with jam or kaymak (between butter and fresh cream), or peksimeti (more airy uštipci with yogurt), burek (filo pastry filled with cheese or herbs), fruit, raw vegetables, cheese, cured meats (raw ham in non-Muslim establishments) and ends with a Bosnian coffee. Prefer small family-run hotels and hostels, which often also have a good restaurant.

Smokers

In enclosed public places, and therefore hotels, smoking is officially prohibited. But hoteliers have two years to comply with the latest anti-smoking law passed in 2022. Not sure it will work everywhere.

Tourist traps

Not only are unpleasant surprises rare, but one can get unexpected discounts out of season. On the other hand, one may be surprised by the business acumen of hoteliers in the Catholic pilgrimage village of Međugorje (not recognized by the Vatican). In any case, the most shocking by far is the town of Višegrad: the local tourist office recommends without batting an eyelid hotels that were the sites of the worst atrocities during the last war.
