Timetable

In Santo Domingo as in the rest of the country, shops and boutiques are generally open from 8:30 am to noon and from 2:30 pm to 6 pm every day (some without interruption at noon), except on Sundays.

Budget & Tips

The good deals are rarely made in the tourist poles in Dominican Republic. To obtain good prices, in terms of craft industry in particular, the best is still to go in the villages of the country. For cigars, the best is to go directly in the factories, and for all that touches the food, the ordinary supermarkets remain very good places of shopping.

What's very local

It is difficult to leave the Dominican Republic without your bottle of rum or mamajuana (rum flavoured with cinnamon and ginger and supposed to cure all ills), your box of cigars, or your larimar or amber pendant. You will also be asked (at least several times a day!) to buy a Haitian art painting, of uneven quality, it's up to you...

Tourist traps

In the capital as well as in the other tourist cities of the country, we recommend you to be careful with the "guides" who propose to assist you in your purchases, because they perceive a commission if they take you in certain handicraft shops, commission directly passed on to the price of your purchases.
