Practical information : Accomodation Uruguay
Budget & Tips
Accommodation rates in Uruguay vary depending on the quality and services offered. For those on a budget, a hostel or guesthouse can be found for US$20-40 per night, while a 3-star hotel or apartment can cost between US$40-100 per night. Travelers looking for more comfort can find upscale accommodations, such as a four- or five-star hotel, for rates ranging from US$100 to US$300 per night. For those on a larger budget, luxury accommodations, such as a luxury hotel or private villa, are available for US$300 or more per night. The cost of a stay in an estancia with full board varies between 100 and 300 US$ per night depending on the quality of the establishment and the season. This includes lodging, meals and activities on site. It is advisable to book in advance to get the best rates. Prices may be higher for luxury estancias.
The VAT (Value Added Tax) in Uruguay is 22%. However, foreign tourists can get a VAT exemption on accommodation services by presenting their passport and paying with a foreign credit or debit card. Commonly accepted methods of payment include cash (Uruguayan pesos), credit and debit cards (Visa, Mastercard, American Express) and bank transfers. Online payments are also possible through platforms such as PayPal or other online payment services. The country does not have a vacation voucher system like some European countries.
To be booked
During the months of December, January and February, and especially during the major events of Carnival, accommodation prices can skyrocket due to the influx of tourists looking for sun, sea and festivities. It is not uncommon for rates to quadruple, which can make your vacation budget explode! It is advisable to book in advance to get the best deals and the lowest rates. Visiting the country during the low season (April to October) can allow you to benefit from price reductions on accommodation. For longer stays, consider renting an apartment for reduced weekly or monthly rates. Note that weekends are often an opportunity for people to leave the big cities and head to the countryside. And for travelers, this means affordable hotel rates in Montevideo! Also, be aware that many hotels close between May and September, reducing the accommodation options available during this period.
What's very local
If you are looking for an authentic vacation experience in Uruguay, then why not follow the example of the locals and rent a house on the coast? Most Uruguayans opt for this solution rather than staying in hotels. You'll find a wide selection of accommodations for every style, from luxury condos to rustic bungalows. In the heart of the enchanting shores, a singular dwelling rises like an invitation to adventure: the rancho. Far from being a simple ranch, it is rather a rustic cabin that embodies the authentic spirit of the beaches. In Rocha, these havens of peace are adorned with wood and corrugated iron, offering basic protection from the vagaries of the sky. Each rancho is a unique experience: sometimes simple with running water and electricity, sometimes a true refuge where time seems to stand still. It's worth remembering that beach house owners often ask guests to bring their own bedding and towels. Be sure to check if these essentials are provided before booking, and don't hesitate to contact your host to see if they can help you out. Don't forget to bring your own toiletries, toilet paper, insect repellent and other essentials, especially if you plan to stay for more than a few days. From April to October, don't forget to bring warm clothes, as the insulation of Uruguayan houses often leaves much to be desired.
For food lovers
From the classic continental breakfast to the more hearty options like the American breakfast, as well as the local flavors of the traditional Uruguayan breakfast(bizcochos, mate, tortas fritas, bread and jam), there is something for everyone. Buffet lovers will find a wide selection of dishes to compose their breakfast, while those who prefer a healthy and balanced diet can opt for the healthy breakfast.
Smokers
Some tourist establishments may have outdoor smoking areas, such as terraces or balconies, where guests are allowed to smoke. It is recommended that you check each establishment's smoking policy before your stay.
Tourist traps
When you arrive at a rancho, you may have to do some basic cleaning, including windows, refrigerator and dust. This can be frustrating, especially when you are paying a high price for rustic accommodations because of their popular location during the high season. If this is a problem for you, take the time to carefully read the reviews of previous travelers or choose to stay during the low season.
