Budget & Tips
Although it is not uncommon to see runners in Guatemala City, physical exercise is not particularly widespread in the country. This does not mean that the inhabitants are inactive, only that they exercise differently than in France. For example, here, walking is inevitable, especially in rural communities.
Thus, most of the sports offered by hostels, hotels and tour agencies are exclusively for tourists, both domestic and foreign. One of the most popular sports is yoga, which has developed a cult following in San Marcos La Laguna, on the shores of Lake Atitlan, and is becoming increasingly popular on the Pacific coast, especially around El Paredon. The latter region is also popular with sport fishing and surfing enthusiasts. In addition, rafting possibilities are numerous in the Highlands, rich in waterways. Finally, hiking is a must, whether it is trekking to the top of the Acatenango and Tajumulco volcanoes or expeditions in the Petén, to discover remote Mayan sites such as El Mirador. Whatever the activity, the prices are relatively affordable, but climb according to the duration: a night in a camp will cost a few hundred quetzals.
If one prefers to bubble, the thermal springs of the surroundings of Quetzaltenango constitute an interesting option. More expensive - but still less expensive than in France - massages offered everywhere in the country, in salons as well as in youth hostels and hotels, offer a nice moment of relaxation.
What's very local
Soccer is a must: even the smallest villages have a field. If you happen to pass by a practice, don't hesitate to ask to join the game, or, failing that, to stop for a few moments to watch the players. In addition, some Guatemalans are keen on boxing and basketball.
To be booked
If you want to take part in a yoga session or learn to surf, you don't need to plan ahead; you just have to hope that your stay in the area coincides with the current course schedule. So, as soon as you arrive in a new city that offers an activity you might be interested in, don't hesitate to ask about upcoming lessons or dates. Also, during the high season, surfboards can be in short supply, so even if you have to pay a little more, it's better to book a board by the week rather than by the day.
Tourist traps
Cut out the middleman: only go through the establishment directly, whether it is a sports association, a massage parlour, a tour agency, a hotel or a youth hostel.
