Practical information : Treat yourself (& others) Oman
Timetable
Grocery stores, supermarkets, shopping centers and malls are mostly open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. throughout the week, with the exception of Friday mornings in small towns. Souks, on the other hand, are open in the morning and late afternoon from 4 or 5 p.m., and are particularly lively at weekends.
What's very local
Few stores line the streets as they do in Europe. Omanis shop mainly in shopping arcades, malls, supermarkets and souks.
While haggling is not practiced in the stores, it is commonplace, even institutional, in the souks.
A number of classic souvenirs are worth bringing back from Oman, including dates, incense and incense burner, local perfume, shisha, camel cane, Bedouin jewelry, kandjar, kumma, woven baskets, camel hair products, etc. For ideas on souvenirs, see our "What to bring back from your trip" section.
Tourist traps
Compare and negotiate your purchases in the souks where the variation of prices is important and the possible counterfeits as everywhere else (but in much smaller number than in the Maghreb countries for example). Ideally, ask a local for the average price of the desired product before starting the negotiation.
