Nightlife isn't exactly the highlight of a stay in Malaysia. With the exception of Kuala Lumpur, Langkawi, Penang and Melaka, few cities offer nightclubs where you can dance the night away. Nightclubs open in the late afternoon, from 5pm, and close at 3am. On weekends, they close at 5am.

Budget & Tips

Entry to clubs is cheaper than in Europe. A RM50 ticket is all you need to enter Kuala Lumpur's trendiest clubs. Prices vary according to the venue, its program and the day of the week. Most clubs offer "happy hour" at the end of the day/beginning of the evening to attract the off-peak crowds.

Night transport

Cabs are the safest and most convenient way to get back to your hotel room. Even with the nightly surcharge, fares remain very reasonable. You can also use the services of the Grab driver app, Malaysia's equivalent of Uber.

Age restrictions

The legal drinking and smoking age is 21. This is also the minimum age for entering nightclubs. If you're over the age limit, or if you look young, it's best to bring some form of identification with you, especially in KL.

What's very local

The custom is certainly not Malaysian, but proper attire is required to enter clubs, especially the more select ones. It's best to dress to the nines. Avoid shorts, flip-flops and anything else that might make you look like a penniless tourist.

Smokers

Smoking is forbidden in public places and within 3 meters of the premises. Some discotheques have smoking lounges equipped with extractors, as in airports. Others close their doors on terraces or outdoors.

Tourist traps

The resale of tickets for shows is ubiquitous, whether online or in the vicinity of the venue. While it's true that you can save a few ringgits by buying from resellers, it would be a shame to waste your money on fake tickets. So use the official ticket offices.
