Cafés are open during the day, sometimes very early for kopitiams (local cafés), and close in the late afternoon. Bars open in the late afternoon and close between 1 and 5 a.m., depending on their authorization.
Budget & Tips
A cup of coffee or tea shouldn't cost you more than RM5 in a kopitiam, RM10 in a more upscale café. Alcohol is sold at about the same price as in Europe. It is a little more expensive on the peninsula than in Borneo, however. You should expect to pay between RM12 and RM15 for a beer (30 cl) and RM25 and RM30 for a cocktail.
There is one major exception. Langkawi Island is a duty-free port. Local beer is sold at an average price of RM7.
Age restrictions
Alcohol is prohibited for sale and consumption up to the age of 21. Access to bars and pubs is theoretically forbidden to young people under the legal drinking age.
What's very local
Happy hour" is popular in touristy areas. It usually takes place between 5pm and 8pm, and can be very good for the wallet, with a free drink for every one purchased.
Bands are often invited to liven up evenings in bars, sometimes until late. Karaoke is also a popular pastime for Malaysians.
