Timetable
Stores and boutiques are generally open from 10am to 7pm, Monday to Friday, and until 3pm on Saturdays. Watch out for the lunch break, which sometimes lasts from 1pm to 3pm in some shops. Stores in seaside resorts are generally open all week without interruption.
Budget & Tips
Choose to buy your tea directly when visiting tea factories or in the stores of major tea brands, to avoid paying the middleman.
Sri Lanka is not really a "shopping "destination, but you will find some excellent local handicrafts.
What's very local
Bargaining is not systematic, but it is part of custom. It's possible to haggle over prices in the markets and small stores of seaside resorts, but never in the stores of big cities or shopping malls. It's up to you to decide whether this is possible and what the limits are.
Many jewelry shops will offer you pieces set with sapphires (one of the island's specialties), emeralds or other precious stones... Always choose a store that is well established and can show you a certificate for gems.
Tourist traps
Common sense is all it takes to avoid scams. Of course, if someone offers to sell you precious stones (sapphires in particular), jewelry or gold at rock-bottom prices, don't be fooled! If you think you're being scammed, don't hesitate to call the tourist police.
