Practical information : Going out Maldives
Timetable
Opening hours vary greatly depending on the type of island you choose. Some bars on private islands operate 24 hours a day, while others close their doors around 1am. Some hotels offer happy hour before dinner, where you get a free drink for every one you buy. On local islands, there are very few places where you can have a drink (even a non-alcoholic one) after 11pm.
Budget & Tips
Alcohol is a highly controlled import and is subject to heavy taxes. A cocktail costs at least US$13-15.
To be booked
There's no place to go out in the Maldives, apart from the cafés on the local islands or the bars in the island hotels. The more festive islands host live bands and DJs on certain evenings, but reservations are not necessary.
Night transport
The only islands served by bus are Hulhumalé and Addu. Buses generally run between 6am and 11pm. Timetables can be consulted at www.mtcc.mv.
Age restrictions
Alcohol consumption is generally prohibited in the Maldives. However, it is permitted on the island hotels and floating bars off the local islands. Consumption of alcohol by minors under the age of 18 is prohibited.
What's very local
There's no particular dress code for partying in the Maldives. You are a resident of the hotel and come as you please, although it's true that most guests like to make a little effort in the evening. Some hotels practice the tradition of "soirée blanche" once a week.
Smokers
In theory, smoking is forbidden in enclosed public spaces. But these are rare in the Maldives, thanks to its generous climate.
Tourist traps
The Maldives is a very safe country, and there are no scams or tourist traps in particular.
