National holiday celebrating the day the country became an autonomous republic (June, 1963), before its independence.
Every year on June1, Kenyans celebrate the day their country became a self-governing republic (June1, 1963), the first step towards full independence, which was achieved on December 12, 1963. It is one of three national holidays established under Article 8 of the 2010 Constitution, along with "Heroes' Day" (October 20), which honours all those who fought for independence. In Nairobi, this day is marked by a magnificent parade, accompanied by songs, traditional dances and a fireworks display.
