Every 3rd June the "Martyrs of Uganda" are commemorated. A multitude of pilgrims flock to the Catholic shrine of Namugongo (Kampala) to meditate and remember the Christians who were sent ad patres by order of the Kabaka Mwanga in 1886. During this day, which is a non-working day and is celebrated in each of the dioceses of the country, the pilgrims, some of whom have travelled for weeks to reach Kampala, attend a mass, make jaculatory prayers and give alms.
