Practical information : Move & Laze around Uganda
Budget & Tips
uS$80 to climb one of the three volcanoes in Mgahinga National Park, US$140 for rafting on the Nile, a minimum of US$155 to climb Mount Elgon, US$1,345 to US$1,480 to climb Margherita Peak (Rwenzori massif)... Getting around Uganda can be expensive. But it's possible to keep fit without breaking the bank! Without spending a penny, you can swim safely in lakes Nabugabo, Bunyonyi and Mutanda, hike almost the entire country, ride mountain bikes on the country's many trails and run here and there. If you feel like it, try your hand at jogging in the heights of the Kapchorwa district, the homeland of Stephen Kiprotich, marathon winner at the 2012 London Olympics, and Joshua Cheptegei, gold medallist at the 2024 Paris Olympics in the 10,000-metre race, with a new Olympic record of 26 minutes and 43.14 seconds!
Your documents please
Anyone embarking on the Central Circuit or the Kilembe Trail (Rwenzori National Park) is required to take out a multi-sport insurance policy covering, among other things, search and rescue costs in the high mountains. Although not required by the Uganda Wildlife Authority for the ascent (admittedly less long and less technical) of Wagagai Peak (Mount Elgon National Park) or Muhavura (Mgahinga National Park), culminating at over 4,000 meters, such insurance may also prove beneficial during your hike or trek to these heights. Please note that there is a minimum age for certain sporting activities, such as the Grade 5 rafting day on the Nile, which (apart from a few exceptions) has a minimum age of 16.
To be booked
A week-long expedition to the roof of the country is not something you can improvise: booking several months in advance is a must if you want to tackle the Rwenzori's snow-covered peaks. Those planning shorter (1 to 3 days) and/or lower-altitude guided hikes in the same mountain range or elsewhere in the country (Mount Moroto, Elgon Massif, Virunga...) will have more latitude in organizing their hikes, but will still need to book at least a day in advance (although it is highly recommended to book several days or weeks in advance of your sporting outing). For kayaking and rafting downstream of Bujagali, reservations are similarly recommended (24 hours at the latest). Of course, sporting events and competitions, such as running races, require prior registration. Coached activities, such as dance classes, also require reservation. Tennis, golf or futsal (in Kampala) don't necessarily require booking, provided you turn up during the off-peak mid-week hours (to protect your back, it's wise to book anyway...).
