Shops open early and close early, with the exception of shopping malls, which tend to follow the metropolitan model.

Budget & Tips

Products coming from France are mostly taxed when they arrive in Mayotte, so you have to expect a surcharge for imported goods, especially food, computers and furniture. To spend less, nothing is better than spending locally: do your food shopping at the market, and hunt in the artisan shops.

Sales

The sales season is modelled on that of the mainland in department stores, which are often franchises of those you will find in France.

What's very local

Favour the purchase of local handicrafts made in Mayotte, jewellery, jams, essential oils... Local talents are numerous, do them justice. The ideal place to get a good overview of what is best is the market in Mamoudzou on the third Saturday of the month or the one in Coconi on the first Saturday of the month.

Tourist traps

Always check the rules of the customs before making a purchase, you are on an island, the control is reinforced in particular as regards the import-export of fruits, seeds and plants. For some products made from natural products (wood, stone, plants), a certificate of authenticity may be required.
